What does the role involve
Leading the organisation by working with and through the officers, staff and trustees to achieve our vision which is to provide the ‘Best Student Life’ for the students at Bristol University. This involves delivering a wide range of activities and services from supporting over 300 clubs and societies, providing a vibrant hub for students which includes activity spaces, theatres, cafe- bar, advice service, lettings agency plus much more as well as ensuring that students have their say and are able to shape their university experience. An SU is a business that is led by students and run by professionals on a day to day basis it’s about working in an organisation that delivers a wide range of services and striving to do the best we can but it’s more fun than most places and is underpinned by a strong values based ethos.
What’s the best thing about it?
The variety, the people and the fun. It is without doubt the best place I have ever worked at.
How did you get here?
I’ve had senior leadership roles in the recruitment, training and education sectors and have worked in the private sector and local government. I think that my breadth of experience from outside the SU / Student Association sector has been really helpful and has allowed me to add value and bring new ideas.
What’s was the most helpful piece of learning you picked up along the way?
If you want to have happy customers in this case students you have to start with happy staff so investing in your staff, addressing their needs and caring about their wellbeing is probably the most significant thing you can do as a leader.
