In a further education college there will typically be one or two staff members with specific responsibilities for developing and supporting the students’ union. The staff role may have a specific focus on either learner voice – supporting student advocacy, or alternatively the role may focus more on developing student activities such as societies, sports and community volunteering. The role also has responsibility for overseeing the governance of the students’ union, including administration of the election process in line with the constitution. In the majority of cases the staff are employed by the college, and in some cases may have other responsibilities within college life.
