STUDENT UNION ADVISOR – JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Student Union Advisor
RESPONSIBLE TO: Student Engagement Manager
RESPONSIBLE FOR: Student volunteers (e.g. Student Listeners)
HOURS: 37.5 hours per week
This may include occasional weekend and evening work
RATE OF PAY: Scale 3, Point 1 (£22,816 pa)
PLACE OF WORK: Winchester Student Union, King Alfred Centre (SO22 4NR)
PURPOSE OF THE POST
Working closely with the Vice President, Education & Welfare and under the direction of the Student Engagement Manager, the Student Union Advisor is responsible for delivering a high quality, independent and confidential advice service to current students at the University of Winchester. As Advisor at Winchester Student Union Advice Centre, you will be responsible for providing free, impartial advice, information and support that will empower students to resolve the difficulties they are facing. With a primary focus on academic issues, you will also be expected to advise on matters relating to wellbeing, housing and money. The Advice Centre areas of support currently include, but are not limited to:
• Academic – complaints, academic appeals, academic misconduct, extenuating circumstances, fitness to practise, supported study.
• Wellbeing – low mood, supporting friends, alcohol and drugs, consent, personal safety.
• Housing – private renting, rights as a tenant, housemate disputes.
• Money – budgeting and tips for saving.
The purpose of the post is also to research and update relevant literature and information necessary for the effective provision of the Advice Centre and to provide insight to elected officers, Student Union staff and other key stakeholders, particularly on matters where trends in individual casework are indicative of an issue impacting on an increasing number of students. The postholder will also work more widely across the Union to support the needs of students, with a particular focus on supporting relevant areas of the Education & Welfare Zones and aligning work with Union strategy.
