About

Part political, part business and part charity – NUS (National Union of Students) is a third sector membership organisation with a twist! Our Vision is of NUS as a pioneering, innovative and powerful campaigning organisation: the definitive national voice of students. We will fight barriers to education, empower students to shape both a quality learning experience and the world around them, supporting influential, democratic and well-resourced students’ unions. Our professional team of over 100 creative NUS colleagues work together every day to support elected student leaders - as they make change in the world and improve the lives of students - we help make it happen!

Summary

NUS is on the lookout for an experienced organiser who can help us build a bold and powerful student movement to transform education.

Job Description

Our new campaign strategy centres digital mobilisation combined with deep, transformational organising so that we can build and sustain high participation in our campaigns.

We’re piloting a new approach to student organising and your primary responsibility in this post would be to support 5 newly appointed Union Organisers, who are current students, to establish regional organising spaces and connect them to our national campaigning. Drawing on your organising, coaching and mentoring skills you’d equip them with the knowledge and tools to bring together elected officers in students’ unions, new and experienced student activists in their assigned regions to identify and win on the major issues facing us locally and nationally.

As the key activities are part of developing NUS’ campaign methodology there’s lots of space for creativity and testing out what works. The successful candidate would share learning, generate ideas and evaluate impact to contribute to our longer term strategy and drive home this shift in campaign practice across the movement from students’ unions to the grassroots.

The priority campaigns for 21/22 are;

  • New Vision for Education – UK-wide campaign to win a funded, accessible, lifelong and democratised post-16 education
  • Decolonise Education – UK-wide campaign to break the link between education and companies that fuel colonialism
  • Student Summer Package: Bridge the gap – Campaign to win a new summer support payment for students in Scotland

Responsibilities:

  • Induct, train up and coach 5 part time Union Organisers through bi-weekly 121s and team meetings
  • Support the Union Organisers/NUS to establish and run regional student organising spaces
  • Support Union Organisers/NUS to mobilise students for Student Strike: Walk out Teach in campaign action in March
  • Share learning and evaluate impact with NUS UK Campaigns Director in order to develop NUS’ organising approach and campaign methodology

While there is some flexibility with working hours and most responsibilities can be undertaken remotely, there will be a need for some participation in team meetings during office hours and some in-person activities, such as facilitating an organiser training day in December.

Required skills and experience:

  • Significant experience of organising in communities and/or young people
  • Experience of training, coaching and supporting organisers
  • Basic knowledge of the student movement

Contract type: Fixed Term, independent contractor/consultant (self-employed)

Contract Terms: 16 days to be worked between December 2021 – March 2022 (3 months) with possibility of extension. This amounts to approx. 7-10 hours per week but may be worked flexibly in agreement over this period to complement campaign timeline

Rate: Day rate of £200 per day
