Summary

We’re looking for someone who can bring research to life to help Northumbria Students’ Union do what it does best – have a positive impact on the lives of students. You will support our activity by providing a high-quality evidence base and recommendations, to enable others to act on the issues that matter most to our students. You will support all departments in planning high quality research and delivery of the Union’s strategic plan. Ensure the Union uses robust tools and methodology in data collection. Analyse data generated by the Union through diverse means and provide meaningful analysis that staff and student leaders can use to drive change.

Job Description

1.   To ensure a coordinated, ethical and legal approach to gathering data about our members, and the use of this data in our activities.

2.   To coordinate and run surveys to gather information about the student experience at Northumbria which can meaningfully inform organisational development and representation work.

3.   To collate and analyse departmental data weekly and monthly, providing each team with a dashboard of their results against targets using Power Bi software.

4.   To oversee the analysis of key data sets such as NSS, Your Union: Your Say, PRES, Go Out and Listen Days etc. in line with organisational and Officer priorities.

5.   In partnership with the Heads of Department ensure Officers and staff across the organisation are briefed on relevant research findings and equipped to incorporate these into their work.

6.   Support all departments to ensure that research across all parts of the Union are threaded together.

7.   To provide the lead managers with the key outcomes from research activities to then feed back to students in an appropriate and timely manner.

8.   To support staff in testing students’ view on activities that we are or might be considering undertaking e.g. carrying out Focus Groups post-Freshers’ Week etc.

9.   To provide support for key student consultation activities.

10.To support and advise other teams with secondary research activities.

11.To stay abreast of innovation taking place in the research field and ensure relevant approaches are applied to Union projects.

12.To coordinate primary research projects to inform SU policy and campaigns.

13.To support staff in equipping representatives and officers with data and evidence that enables them to fulfil their duties.

14.To support and deliver consultation work to inform upcoming or proposed strategic change.

15.Carrying out research with Northumbria University and other Students’ Unions.

17.To provide Northumbria Students’ Union’s leadership team with a range of annual and in-year evaluation tools to inform decision-making and strategic direction.

18.To support the organisation to understand, measure and report on the impact of its work.

19.To ensure strategic KPIs are measured robustly and reported.

20.To support Northumbria Students’ Union’s leadership to identify appropriate performance measures in strategic and annual planning processes.

21.To support teams across the organisation to evaluate their projects and progress against annual plans.

22.To encourage learning from evaluation activities and its application in a timely manner.

23.To support a culture of learning and continuous improvement within the organisation.

24.To provide analysis of our brand effectiveness and touchpoints e.g. conducting or commissioning brand audits.

Other Duties

25.To aspire to the highest standards of services at all times.

26.To comply with Students’ Union and building policies on lone working and being responsible for the communal space on agreed evenings.

27.To attend appropriate and relevant training events, courses and conferences as required.

28.To respect the democratic structure of the Students’ Union; the post holder will be expected to work closely with elected officers.

29.To abide by the Students’ Union Constitution, policies and procedures at all times.

30.To uphold the Students’ Unions environmental and wider corporate social responsibility practices.

31.To attend conferences and seminars as and when required.
