We are a democratic, membership-led organisation. We provide services and support to our members, the students at the University of Derby, which enable them to develop their skills for future careers, provide a source of fun and enjoyment, offer opportunities to meet new people and become active citizens through volunteering. We also provide a broad range of commercial service which include bar and kitchen venues, coffee shops and several retail outlets.

Summary

The Union of Students at the University of Derby is looking for an enthusiastic and passionate leader to join our Senior Management Team, providing maternity cover for this instrumental role.  As a Union we are dedicated to providing transformational opportunities to students at the University of Derby to help them make the most of their University experience and to prepare them for success following their degree. The successful candidate will lead on the strategic development of our communications, marketing, digital presence, and brand, ensuring that effective marketing remains a key enabler of the Union’s strategic plan. Through an insights-led approach you will tailor our communications towards their interests and preferences and evaluate our progress in making data-driven improvements to our students’ experience of University. You will be responsible for business development activity that seeks to create and develop new partnerships with local, regional, and national businesses.

Job Description

We are ambitious and keen to challenge ourselves to be better. We require an experienced manager to support our Marketing Team and continue to develop and maintain relationships, internally (within the Union and the University) and externally.

It is an exciting time as we will be launching our new strategic plan in the coming academic year and the successful candidate will support the Senior Management Team to embed this within the organisation.

Starting salary: £34,987 per annum (subject to Tax and NI contributions and if applicable pension contributions)

Holiday entitlement: 28 days of holiday entitlement, additional bank holidays and concessionary days as determined by the Union.

Contract:  Temporary for Maternity cover, initially for a period of 7 months (6 months cover with 2 weeks handover either side; this is subject to the post-holder).

Work pattern: 37 hr working week; 4 days of which are to be worked from the office. We will consider applications for secondments, part time or job share, flexible working.

Location: Kedleston Road, Derby

Responsible for:  Campaign Coordinator, Communications Coordinator (Commercial), Content Coordinator , Graphic Designer Digital Coordinator, The Street Team (part time student staff), and any Interns.

Purpose of Role:
To lead on the strategic development of our communications, marketing, digital presence, and brand, ensuring that effective marketing remains a key enabler of the Union’s strategic plan. Through an insights-led approach you will tailor our communications towards their interests and preferences and evaluate our progress in making data-driven improvements to our students’ experience of University. You will be responsible for business development activity which seeks to create and develop new partnerships with local, regional and national businesses. This role is critical in ensuring the Union is relevant to, and at the heart of, the lives of students.  The post holder will support and coach staff, Officer Trustees and student leaders to achieve excellence, fostering a culture where staff and students can create positive change.

Strategic management:
Embed a culture of student involvement, whereby students actively engage in a positive way to create change that benefits current and/or  future students

In conjunction with the Senior Management Team, develop and deliver the Union’s Strategic Plan; promoting our aims and values through the goals of the operational and departmental plans

Work with the Senior Management Team to devise and implement a programme of research into members’ needs in order to shape our plans and activities

People management:

Drive a high-performing, inclusive culture across the Union; support the implementation of the People Strategy which is values led and enables our staff and volunteers to achieve our strategic ambitions

Coach and support Union staff and Officers to increase their confidence and capability within their roles

Line manage those as detailed above to achieve departmental and organisational strategy and ensure that key objectives are set, agreed and monitored, through the appraisal processes

Leadership:

Set the tone in terms of effective leadership and ensure excellent delivery standards within the team

Effectively manage the resources of the Union including managing the activities of the department within agreed budgetary parameters; ensure all Marketing and Communications staff adhere with the Union’s financial procedures and regulations, ensuring that control systems are successfully managed

Develop and maintain good working relationships with the University and external stakeholders

Delivery

Support the Union to find innovative solutions and creative new ways of raising awareness and delivering the Union’s mission, vision and values and sharing this practice amongst our networks and stakeholder groups to raise the profile of the Union regionally and nationally.

Increase student awareness of Union services, events and activities through the development and implementation of the marketing and communications strategy.

Ensure the ongoing development of the Union’s brand, building our visual identity and reputation with students, the University and external stakeholder.
