Role
Responsible for ensuring the team run high quality engagement opportunities for students and support the Union’s work in Making Student Life Better. Include lines from strategic plan
Representation Activities
⦁ Run Union democratic processes in strict accordance to the relevant policies, such as General Meetings and Referendums.
⦁ Assist the Director of Membership Services with governance and democracy oversight.
⦁ Stand in for the Director of Membership Services at University meetings as and when requested.
⦁ Attend School Education and Student Experience Committee
⦁ Manage annual student elections, acting as the Deputy Returning Office, whilst increasing engagement and ensuring the diversity of candidates
⦁ Increase engagement in the Union’s representation & democratic processes.
⦁ Assist the Director of Membership Services in training, supporting and coaching elected officers with their duties.
⦁ Provide the elected officers with relevant student feedback and insight ahead of University meetings as requested.
⦁ Maintain an up to date awareness of University and wider policy issues affecting students.
⦁ Establish and maintain strong partnerships with key university partners’ relevant University departments and external partners.
⦁ Ensure the Course Representatives are appropriately recruited, trained and supported.
⦁ Develop new and innovative methods of collecting student feedback and representing students.
⦁ Encouraging and supporting students to run their own campaigns.
⦁ Work closely with the Marketing & Communications Team to ensure we are closing the feedback loop so that students understand how we are using their feedback to create change.
Student Activities
⦁ Ensure that the Engagement Team provide a high level of customer service at all times.
⦁ Develop new and innovative student activity programmes that engage the full breadth of the University population.
⦁ Ensure the Society Committees are appropriately recruited, trained and supported.
⦁ Manage annual awards ceremonies/activities in collaboration with the officers and relevant BSU colleagues.
⦁ Ensure all engagement activities are evaluated for impact.
⦁ Research and implement innovative ways to increase meaningful engagement with the full range of our student population.
⦁ Manage the Union’s skills development programme and Give it a Go programme.
⦁ Manage the Union’s societies supporting students to run engaging and fun activities.
⦁ Increase the number of societies on campus and increase the number of members of societies.
⦁ Develop processes and procedures for student fundraising that enables groups or individual students to raise funds for good causes or their courses.
⦁ Create new opportunities for student media establishing a student newspaper and radio station.
⦁ Reviewing and renewing our internal processes to ensure they are easy for our members to use and access.
⦁ Working closely with the Marketing & Communications team ensure activities are well advertised and easy to access.
Management
⦁ Responsible for the recruitment, induction and ongoing training of all team members, in close liaison with the HR Department.
⦁ Carry out team member’s formal and informal performance reviews.
⦁ Responsible for departmental budget income and expenditure.
⦁ Devise and deliver Engagement team’s operational plan.
⦁ Ensure any HR issues relating to staff members are reported promptly to the HR department.
⦁ Be an active member of the BSU Management team.
⦁ Be a leader and positive role model.
General duties
⦁ Work in a manner which reflects the values and democratic structure of the Union as shown in the Union’s Articles and Strategic Plan.
⦁ Keep up to date with relevant legislation, policies and practices, rules and regulations relevant to the role.
⦁ Adhere to all Brighton Students’ Union policies and procedures.
⦁ Ensure the delivery of a positive image of the Union, both internally and externally by displaying high standards of professionalism, politeness, conduct and service.
⦁ Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be expected given the incumbent’s qualifications and experience.
⦁ Participate in and take ownership of their induction, personal development plan, and departmental staff meetings and be responsible for undertaking duties with full regard for others within the conditions of employment detailed in the Staff Handbook.
⦁ Assist in key events and activities throughout the year e.g. open days, Fresher’s week, Elections and sustainability activities as required.
