About

UCB a special place. We bake cakes and we build businesses, we're Michelin star and we're mixologists. Like the Jewellery Quarter where we're rooted, we take the raw materials of our city and turn them into precious goods. Run by students, for students - the Guild is the students’ union at UCB, and it exists to build a vibrant, inclusive and welcoming home for every student. So that students can lead the way together, and forge a better future. The Guild was established as an independent charity in 2018, and has grown from a basement under the stairs to the heart of student life. UCB Guild was a finalist in Students’ Union of the Year in the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2022.

Summary

UCB Guild is seeking an outstanding Guild Director. Shortlisted for WhatUni SU of the Year 2022, we aim to be amongst the best unions in the UK by 2025. Do you have an ambition that matches our own?

Job Description

Following our current Director’s recent appointment as Chief Exec at Middlesex SU we are looking for the next outstanding candidate to take on a leadership role in our small but rapidly developing Union, in this exceptional new University.

UCB Guild has been building year on year since it established as an independent Charity in 2018, and has grown from a basement under the stairs to the heart of student life. With a bold 2025 Strategy, the Union is well on its journey to build a vibrant, inclusive and welcoming home for every student, so that our students leave UCB at their personal best. We have a great sabbatical team, a strong relationship with the institution and a positive and experienced Board. Along the way, the Guild has become a nominee for Students’ Union of the Year in the WhatUni Student Choices Awards 2022, and this year achieved the highest percentage election turn out in the country, with 30.25% of our students voting in the sabbatical officer elections.

The University is making good on plans of its own, responding over the past four years to shortages in regional and national skills demands. It has significantly grown its provision by developing courses in health care and nursing, and is now laying the literal foundations for a new Engineering and Sustainable Construction Centre, as well as opening a new Sixth Form Centre in September 2024. It has also entered into a unique partnership with University of Warwick, working together by providing technical training partnerships and degree apprenticeships, as well as supporting young entrepreneurs, with University of Warwick accredited some University College Birmingham delivered degrees. University College Birmingham stands out nationally when it comes to student feedback, winning the WhatUni Student Choice Awards University of the Year in 2022 and achieving Silver in 2023.

The Guild has the solid foundations of a quality organisation, achieving Investors in People and Thrive at Work accreditation in the past 12 months. The new Guild Director will be expected to build on these foundations, working hand in hand with our excellent elected officer team and student leaders, scaling the Guild to reach new heights. The Union and the University are developing together, coming from a good place with an aim to be amongst the best. Do you have an ambition that matches our own?

We need someone who understands how to get the best from real student leadership to deliver a first class student experience for our diverse student membership. You will need a track record of success and innovation in a leadership role and be ready to take on leading a small but high achieving staff team, developing, coaching and supporting student officers to deliver on our ambitious plans.
