AboutNewman Students' Union is a small but ambitious SU based in Birmingham. We currently have around 2800 members the vast majority of whom commute from the surrounding area. Our demographics also make us unique with the majority of our students being from either mature or from a BME community. We are very proud of our diversity and see this as a key strength. We have for the last four years been the highest rated SU in Birmingham on the NSS. Whilst we are outward looking we are also aware that our demographics are very unique and we want to be the best SU for our members we can be.
Following a move to a brand new students’ union space, burgeoning relationships with the University and the appointment of a new Union Director, we are building on our recent achievements with the introduction of a Student Voice & Advice Department.
This department will ensure that as our engagement continues to grow, we continue to offer outstanding, professional support to our Student Officers and Academic Reps, along with expert academic advice and support to our members.
We are looking for and outstanding individual to join us as a Student Voice & Governance Co-ordinator to play a key part of this new team. This role is fixed term for 18 months, with a view to becoming permanent. It would be an ideal role for someone wishing to enter a career in Students’ Unions or looking to take a next step where they will have the freedom and support to make a real difference right from the start.
As a key member of the Student Voice & Advice Department at Newman Students’ Union, the role holder will work collaboratively with Student Officers, Trustees and Course Representatives to ensure the smooth operation of the Union’s governance framework. This will include providing support to the democratic committees of the Union and playing a key role in election processes.
Guided by this work, alongside the Union Director and President, the postholder will ensure the student voice is at the heart of decision making in the Union and is heard and listened to in all areas of life at Newman.
Working as a team with the Academic Adviser, the Student Voice & Governance Co-ordinator will have the opportunity to shape this new department and deliver timely and meaningful campaigns and initiatives that have a positive impact on student experience.
