What’s your role?
I’m the Student Activities Coordinator at Queen Mary University Students’ Union / Student Association .
What does it involve?
I manage Student Media, RAG and the Welcome Crew who help our students move in in September. This involves supporting the students with their plans, whether it’s printing a newspaper, organising a fundraiser or running a campaign.
What’s the best thing about it?
I love that there are so many aspects to the job. You help students develop and see them grow throughout the year and are then able to reward and celebrate with them at the end of the year.
How did you get here?
I had never worked in a Union before I joined Queen Mary. I had worked in communications and fancied a change so came to Queen Mary and didn’t actually know what a Sabb officer was.
I remember going to a Communities of Practice day (they’re great for networking at!) on the third day in my new role and not knowing what was going on. However everyone was so nice and my team really helped me to settle in and get to grips with everything.
Being part of a friendly and fun Student Engagement team is one of the best things.
What’s was the most helpful piece of learning you picked up along the way?
Good communication is so important – whether it’s with students or your team. Take time to have proper conversations with students as it really helps to break down barriers and shows them you’re there to support them, (sometimes they can think you’re there to stop them from doing things).
